What Really Works for Long-Term Learning?

Stop highlighting! Likewise, no more underlining, rereading, summarizing, or cramming for tests! Research shows that these study techniques are just not useful when used by themselves. But if these typical strategies don’t work, what does? Well, Liberty Harbor knows and has long known, and developed a Spiral Education for this very reason. The education gurus call one aspect of Spiral Education ‘distributive learning.’ This means that learning should be stretched out over a longer period of time, distributed, dipping into material at intervals of time. The longer the intervals and the more repetition, the longer material will ‘stay learned.’ A second learning method, ‘practice testing’ is rated as high-utility as well. This means using frequent quizzes and tests requiring the recall of information which strengthens “knowledge and aids in future retrieval” says Anne Murphy Paul in her article “Highlighting is a Waste of Time: The Best and Worst Learning Techniques.” Liberty Harbor and Spiral Education are already teaching this way. American Dream Award 2013: Cliff Hurst

In the poem The New Colossus, engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, poet Emma Lazarus concludes with the line, “I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” The founders of Liberty Harbor Academy could not imagine a more fitting name for a school that strives to prepare students to seize opportunity when presented, and to create opportunity as they see fit. It is with these abilities that our young people will work towards their American dream.

As we educate our students, we seek to find role models who, by their work ethic, optimism, and commitment to community, demonstrate the attributes needed to make dreams a reality. Each year our school selects one such role model to receive our American Dream Award. His or her name is engraved on a name-plate and secured to our Statue of Liberty plaque, which will be displayed in the school’s lobby.

Let’s Return to a 19th Century Education Model

The new-fangled education skills are just not working. Liberty Harbor believes we need to return to the old-fashioned skills of reading aloud, memorizing multiplication tables, and learning word roots—not to mention practicing cursive handwriting (to be implemented at LHP in the fall). A recent study found that most mathematical mistakes by students can be traced to a lack of readily available basic math facts. They never memorized the multiplication tables.

Computers vs. Live Teachers

In his article, Can Computers Replace Teachers?, Andrew J. Rotherham asks: “what have educational technology efforts accomplished to date and what should we expect?” His answer? Not much. Even if more than 90% of classrooms have computers, according to Mr. Rotherham, “there is scant evidence that technology is improving learning.” In addition, learning tools that simulate games may actually be just that, a game not education. Noliwe Rooks’ article on the pitfalls of online education emphasize what we at Liberty Harbor know—face to face is the best form of education. While university after university rush to promise ’cost savings’, ‘quicker course completion’, ‘study in your pajamas’, and all manner of advantages, the truth remains—online education is inferior. The only segment of the education market that seems to succeed in online education are the highly-motivated, well-organized, and brightest students—they would do well anywhere. How many of those students do you know? The conclusion is that for any student who is not already on the high road to success, it may actually set them back. As Ms. Rooks claims, “the more time students spend with traditional instruction, the better they seem to do” in fact, online education actually “may leave behind the students who need education the most.” Before you opt for having your student sign up to study online, please take the time to find out how to educate them the best! It’s your move! Understand the role probability plays in winning. Learn how to use battle tactics in your every day discussions. Participate in and develop your own internal decision making processes while increasing situational awareness as we introduce you to varieties of chess, classic card games, and more!

Oh Yes You Can!

Learn powerful reading techniques that simultaneously increase reading speed and comprehension. Develop a more creative writing style and explore ways to overcome writer’s block. Take notes in a way that will help you study for tests and exams and acquire a powerful way to store and recall important information. Participate in this learning experience and become a super student!

Forensic Science

Do you love solving mysteries? Participate in discussions relation to crime scene investigations, analysis of hair and fibers, fingerprinting and DNA analysis. Put your skills to the test and solve a theoretical case!

Princess Charm School

For aspiring princesses! Discuss the importance of saying “please and thank you”, practice poise and presence, and enjoy snack time while learning important table manners. We will also have a craft project each day, making items that every princess should own! On our final day, take the stage and model your favorite fashion look!

Leading Roles for Teens

A series of workshops and activities designed for teenagers to learn about how a society functions well, the importance of treating people with respect, the teen’s role in society, valuing others, and living with integrity.

March 2013 Seminar – Mimetic Theory

Title: Sacred Violence, Desire, & Scapegoating: Mimetic Theory

Taught by: Professor Mark Reeder

When: Tuesday evenings in March 2013 from 6 – 8:30pm (the final class has been moved from March 26th to April 2nd)

What have September 11, 2001, the tragedy of the Rodney King beating, the murders at Columbine High School, or the Virginia Tech massacre to do with the tragedies of the Greek playwright Aeschylus? How might understanding a Shakespearean sonnet provide insight into modern relationships?

This seminar will take an interdisciplinary approach using aspects of contemporary literature and film, philosophy and psychology, to analyze the anthropology and mythology underscoring a variety of social and cultural phenomena in both historical and contemporary terms. It will look at the interplay between cultural documents and historical periods in an effort to understand the terrible rise in violence today. Through an analysis of such ideas as the liturgy of public execution, mob violence, the spectacle of sport, the rise, creation-and often “fibrication” of victim hood, and the underlying dynamic of terrorism, participants will come to understand the role of desire as the root of rivalry that both creates and destroys culture.

Seminar participants will read from the work of René Girard as well as selections from Freud, Nietzsche, Greek theater, and the Bible.

The class will meet once a week on Tuesday evenings in March 2013 from 6:00 to 8:30pm at Liberty Harbor Academy, 1230 Elm Street, Manchester, New Hampshire. The seminar fee is $99.00. About the Presenter

Professor Mark Reeder is a founder and faculty member of Liberty Harbor Academy. He holds degrees from University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College. Reeder has written and presented extensively on such topics as mimetic theory, architecture, mimetic theory, religion, humanities, and much more.
